This meal was the result of today’s fishing trip. After Friday’s success, my husband decided he wanted to fish for flounder. So we packed up the boat, went to Sidney and launched it and dropped our pots. Then we headed to James Island to try fishing in the lee of the Island.

We had only been there a couple of minutes when Steve got a bite. I thought his rod might snap in half as it was bent nearly double. When it hit the surface, I was ready with a net…only to discover that instead of a fish…he’d caught a big crab. A female dungeness, as it turned out. When she finally decided to let go of the bait-back she went. He got quite a few more “bites” and was actually able to tell when it was a crab…apparently they grab the bait and keep walking:)

He also got a bite from a Ling Cod (they look rather scary), but it was not in season yet, so it also had to be returned.

After a couple of hours (and lunch), we returned to our traps. The first one we pulled had three large red rock crabs, which we kept. We then pulled the next trap…which took both of us to pull into the boat as it had quite a few crab (several fell out as we were pulling it in).

One got loose in the boat, and gave us a couple minutes of excitement. (If one got under the floor boards, it would be quite a chore to recover it.)

This time we had 9 crabs, 8 of which were large dungeness crabs. I was very excited…until I started picking them up and turning them over. 7 of them were female, and the 8th was a slightly undersized male. All of them had to be returned to the briny deep. The last crab was a legal sized red rock crab. That gave us out limit of 4, so we headed back to the launch.

Strangely, even though we have been back on land for 9 hours…I still keep rocking back and forth and feel as if I am still on the boat.
