Simple Orange Chicken

I decided to have a go at making orange chicken the other day. I made a sauce, then deep fried the chicken and tossed it in the sauce at the last minute. It was quite tasty, and easy to make.

Simple Orange Chicken

  • juice and zest of a medium orange
  • 2 tablespoons sugar or honey
  • 2 tablespoons vinegar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1 tablespoon sweet chili sauce
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 chicken breast halves

I started with setting my rice to cook, and chopping vegetables for a stir fry. Then I combined all the sauce ingredients and put them in a pot over low heat to heat through while I prepared the rest. I cut the chicken breast into cubes, then rolled them in cornstarch. I then dipped them in beaten egg, and rolled them in a flour/cornstarch mixture (1/2 cup of each). I deep fried them for a few minutes, until cooked…and then re-fried them briefly to make sure they were crisp before adding them to the sauce and serving it up. Sprinkling chopped green onions and toasted sesame seeds makes a nice touch (I cannot use seeds as my husband is allergic to them).

This would probably feed four, as chicken goes a long way when breaded.
