Greek Chicken Gyro Recipe

This is one of my all-time favourite meals. It is fast food the way fast food should be- yummy and portable. The amount listed will feed two adults, and possibly one child, depending on appetite.

 

Greek Chicken Gyro Recipe aka Greek Chicken Souvlaki Recipe

  • 2 chicken breast halves
  • 3-4 Greek pita bread or flour tortillas
  • 1/4 cup diced onion
  • 1/4 cup diced tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup diced cucumber (optional)
  • 1/4 cup grated cheese (optional)
  • 1/4 cup tzatziki sauce
  • juice of half a lemon
  • 1 large clove garlic, grated or pressed
  • 1 tablespoon oregano
  • salt, pepper
  • 1-2 tablespoons olive oil

I start by cutting the chicken into 1/2 inch cubes. I put them in a bowl, and add the salt, pepper, oregano, garlic and lemon juice, stirring until thoroughly mixed. I let that sit while I chop the onion, cucumber and tomato and grate the cheese.

Next, I put a wok on to medium heat, and add the olive oil. Do not use high heat with olive oil. Then I add the chicken and cook until it is lightly browned.. I move it to the back of the stove to keep warm, and heat a non-stick frying pan.

I put the pita bread in the frying pan  for several seconds, turning frequently until it is warmed through. Then spread tzatziki sauce on the bread and top with the chicken, onion, tomatoes and cucumber and cheese if desired.

Fold the bottom up, then roll from one side. You can wrap it in parchment paper to keep it from leaking.

I made these with flour tortillas because they are lower in fat and calories, as I am on Weight Watchers. The taste is very similar.

This is great served with Greek Salad.

  1. Looks a great dish. For those who does not like yogurt, Tahini would be a great Mediterranean substitute (not Greek though). A pita bread would be much better than a tortilla here.
